Fuel Pump and Gas Station Safety
As winter approaches, we need to be aware of a hazard that we all commonly encounter. We all have to refuel our vehicles, and with it come the possibility for a fire. “With lower humidity and many people leaving their vehicle running while refueling, there are increased chances of a fire during the winter” states Jeremy VanWey, Fire and Emergency Prevention Officer, Warrensburg Fire Department. Every year, thousands of fires occur at service stations. According to NFPA, there was an average of 5020 fires per year at service stations from 2004-2008

When approaching a refueling pump, the consumer should examine the pump assembly. Ensure that the fuel nozzle latch or hold open device has been released and is not still engaged. Where possible, always insert the nozzle into the fuel spout of the vehicle prior to pumping fuel. Also make sure there is no obvious damage to the hose, nozzle, and the pump system as a whole. This quick visual examination can help prevent an unwanted fuel spill or release. A spill can have many negative consequences, including a higher risk of fire, environmental impacts, and health and safety concerns. When refueling is complete, always return the nozzle back to the cradle and ensure that the hold open device is released

To help prevent fires while refueling your vehicle or filling up gasoline storage containers, the American Petroleum Institute gives the following safety guidelines:

  • Turn off your vehicle engine. Put your vehicle in park and/or set the emergency brake. Disable or turn off any auxiliary sources of ignition such as a camper or trailer heater, cooking units, or pilot lights.
  • Do not smoke, light matches or lighters while refueling at the pump or when using gasoline anywhere else.
  • Use only the refueling latch provided on the gasoline dispenser nozzle. Never jam the refueling latch on the nozzle open.
  • Do not re-enter your vehicle during refueling. If you cannot avoid re-entering your vehicle, discharge any static build-up BEFORE reaching for the nozzle by touching something metal with a bare hand -- such as the vehicle door -- away from the nozzle.)
  • In the unlikely event a static-caused fire occurs when refueling, leave the nozzle in the fill pipe and back away from the vehicle. Notify the station attendant immediately.
“Most of these are preventable fires. We cannot let ourselves get complacent and should always take the appropriate safety precautions when refueling or handling gasoline” advises VanWey. Always remember to follow these basic guidelines when refueling or handling gasoline. By preventing these spills, we also prevent the injuries and damage that accompany them. Chapter 28 of the City of Warrensburg's Code of Ordinances
Chapter 28 of the City of Warrensburg's Code of Ordinances is intended to improve and protect the public’s health by eliminating smoking in all Enclosed Public Places and Enclosed Places of Employment within the City of Warrensburg with few exceptions. This new ordinance will become effective November 23, 2010.

The City of Warrensburg is providing a “No Smoking” window cling for businesses who are interested in receiving one. Those clings will be available at City Hall, along with a “Business Guide” that assists local businesses in better understanding the ordinance and their role in enforcement of the new policies. The City will also be distributing the guides and clings during the months of July and August.

Chapter 28 requires every Enclosed Public Place and Enclosed Place of Employment where smoking is prohibited to conspicuously post near all entrances “No Smoking” signs or the international “No Smoking” symbol as well as remove all ashtrays and smoking receptacles from any area where smoking is prohibited.

Information regarding those facilities and locations that will be exempt from the ordinance, instructions on reporting violations, the benefits of a smoke-free environment and who will be held responsible when a violation occurs, will be provided in a “Guide for the Public” pamphlet also available at City Hall. Both Guides will be posted on the City’s web page at www.warrensburg-mo.com.
