Wal-Mart Gives Back to the Community

Wal-Mart, in its generous practice of giving back to the community, has once again contributed to the City of Warrensburg.

A contribution of $1,500 to the Warrensburg police department and $1,000 to the City of Warrensburg was made on April 28, 2009 at City Hall, Wal-Mart delivered on its promise of giving back to the community.

Bryant Armstrong, Manager Wal-Mart along with Michael Wilson, Assistant Manager Wal-Mart presented the checks to Mayor Jeff Terry and Chief of Police, Bruce Howey.

“Wal-Mart has been very beneficial to us, it has helped to fund things that we haven’t been able to fund in the past,” Howey said.

Wilson emphasized that one of the key components of Wal-Mart as a company has been to support the community, starting from the Boy and Girl Scouts to the different departments of the municipality.

Last year we gave approximately $40,000 to local charities and the city,” he said. “We hope to increase our funds each year, and so this year we hope to approach close to $50,000 to $60,000.”

Mayor Terry highlighted that the funds for the police department would be used for police officer training at Midwest Tactical Training Center, while the City funds would be earmarked for the Old Drum public transportation system that the city subsidizes.

Armstrong said that they enjoy the relationship with the city and are happy to help out with the public transportation and the police department training.

“It’s a matter of us helping them, and them helping us in a cooperative role of working together,” he said.

Howey said that in the past funds received from Wal-Mart have been used to buy a Segway transporter and Automated External Defibrillator for use by the police department.

“The donations to the department have been consistent,” he said. “This year the funding was enough that we will be able to use it to get all our officers to training.”
