Kittens await adoption at Warrensburg Animal Shelter
Warrensburg Animal Shelter has a large number of kittens in need of adoption at their shelter.
“Right now, in spring time, we see a lot of kittens coming to the shelter, some with their mothers while some without them,” Sarah Jacob, Manager of the Animal Shelter said.
Jacob highlighted that the case for most of the kittens is that often people don’t get their cats spayed or neutered; eventually having an accidental litter that ends up at the animal shelter.
Although, the animal shelter charges a minimal fee for surrendering an animal, Jacob emphasized that when they receive puppies and kittens, they work with the people accordingly and do not expect them to pay for every animal.
“Unfortunately, a lot of people, instead of surrendering the kittens to the animal shelter, either dump them in trash cans or leave them in front of our door at night,” Jacob said.
Kittens are very fragile, even the slightest little virus could take away their life and so we work very hard to keep them alive, she said.
Adopting a kitten is just like adopting any other animal. By state regulations, they have to be at least 8 weeks old to adopt, and all kittens are spayed or neutered before they leave the shelter.
The adoption fee for a kitten at Warrensburg Animal Shelter is $35, and it covers the cost of all the services provided by the shelter. Jacob highlighted that often in the spring, when they are not able to deal with the number of kittens at the shelter, they start offering specials such as adopt one kitten and get the second one for free.
“Kittens aren’t as difficult to take care of as puppies. Getting two puppies is comparatively more work than getting two kittens,” Jacob said. “Also, they do a lot better when they are two in number as they have somebody to play with.”
The Animal Shelter has also organized special adoption days in the past, by extending the shelter hours; helping the shelter get 14-17 animals adopted in one day, as compared to the average adoption rates which vary from 3-4 animals per day.
