WARRENSBURG FIRE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES FEDERAL FIRE GRANT
The City of Warrensburg has been notified by the U.S. Fire Administration that the Warrensburg Fire Department was awarded a $133,000 Federal FIRE Act grant on December 26th. The grant was awarded in response to a 2008 application for funds to purchase a portable fire training unit featuring a burn room. This grant requires the City of Warrensburg contribute $7,000 which amounts to five percent of the estimated $140,000 project cost. Funds have been allocated in the current Fire Department budget for the purchase of the portable fire training unit. Several companies manufacture portable fire training units. One such company is Fire Facilities, Inc. An example of the type of unit the Warrensburg Fire Department is seeking can be seen at: http://www.firefacilities.com/mobiletrainee.asp . “Although the unit is described as a portable fire training unit, we anticipate it will be located at Fire Station 2 most of the time,” said Assistant Fire Chief Sean Douglas. “We applied for the grant with the understanding that we would invite crews from other fire departments to use it,” noted Battalion Chief Jim Kushner, the Warrensburg Fire Department’s training officer. While many aspects of a firefighter’s job can be taught without working in a heated and smoke-filled environment, the use of a portable fire training unit equipped with a burn room provides an element of realism that cannot be otherwise duplicated without a suitable facility.
