Applying for a Building Permit


The following permits are required for construction within the City of Warrensburg.

A BUILDING PERMIT must be obtained when you are considering constructing a new structure, enlarging an existing structure, changing or remodeling an existing structure for a non-residential or residential project within the City of Warrensburg and it involves any structural, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical work.

An example of electrical work which requires a permit is alterations or addition to existing electrical installations. Any normal repair or replacement that does not alter its appearance, add to the system, or make it unsafe does not require a permit.

An example of plumbing work which requires a permit is any plumbing or drain laying work except for minor repairs such as fixing leaky faucets, repairing broken fixtures or opening clogged drains. Plumbing permits for new construction are included in the building permit.

An example of mechanical work which requires a permit is installation or replacement of any heat producing or comfort cooling appliance. The installation or replacement of any gas piping requires a permit. Mechanical permit for new construction are included in the building permit.

For the purposes of issuing a building permit, a Site Plan is required in every instance.

The Plan Review Team is available to meet with you prior to your submittal of your commercial construction plans. The team will discuss what infrastructure, building codes or zoning requirements that might apply to your particular project. To schedule a meeting with the Plan Review Team, please contact the Permit Clark at (660) 747-9135. The Plan Review Team consists of the City Planner, Building Official, Public Works, and Fire Marshal.

A SIGN PERMIT must be obtained for the installation of ground mounted signs, freestanding signs, subdivision identification signs, directional signs, wall signs, electronic message centers, projecting signs, roof signs, and home occupations signs. Any repair or replacement of existing signs requires a permit also. The sign ordinance was approved on May 14, 2001. Any signs existing prior to the change of the ordinance are considered grandfathered signs. Any changes to grandfathered sign must be done within the parameters of the existing sign dimensions. OTHER PERMITS – Your project may require permits and inspections from the Public Works Department. The sewer tap, driveway, sidewalk and excavation permits shall be acquired from the Public Works Utility inspector. The fees for these permits will be collected in addition to the fees associated with the construction permits at the time of issuance or the construction permits.
